There are a lot of old homes in Oregon, many of which are renovated every year. During the process of bringing them up to date many construction projects expose dangerous lead paint. When scraping and sanding lead paint particles can find their way into carpets and furniture, potentially causing irreversible brain damage in children if ingested.

In April of 2010 a federal law was passed which required contractors to contain and clean lead dust more carefully during renovation, repair and painting work. Contractors have to go through extensive training to become certified in lead paint abatement. This Lead Paint Abatement Regulation is in response to Congress’ Residential Lead-Based Paint Hazard Reduction Act of 1992. It’s taken 18 years for the home renovation rule regarding lead paint removal regulation to take effect.

Generally, the older a home is, the higher the chances of having lead paint on the interior or exterior. Because lead paint was durable, it was most commonly used in kitchens, trim, bathrooms, windows, porches and doors. The National Center for Healthy Housing estimates about 140,000 U.S. children have lead poisoning and that more than 1 million children are at risk each year when their homes are renovated.

It is sometimes difficult to pick up on signs of lead poisoning because the symptoms aren’t always extremely obvious. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, lead poisoning can lead to learning disabilities, behavioral problems and, at high levels, seizures, comas and even death.
